First Saturdays in the Garden

2008 EVENTS

 

The First Saturdays in the Garden programs are free monthly events featuring gardens and plants in the Fredericksburg area.

 

Held on the first Saturday of each during the growing season, the events run from 9:30 am to Noon (except August), are free, require no pre-registration, are open to the public, and will be held rain or shine.

 

Events in 2008 include illustrated lectures, garden visits, demonstrations, hands on activities and a plant exchange, which is an annual event.

A Walk on the Wild Side

Belmont has many acres of wildlife habitat in addition to their formal gardens.  Join the staff, Master Gardeners, and Master Naturalists for guided tours exploring the butterfly garden, native grass meadows, and woodland paths.   There will also be an illustrated talk on these areas were created and maintained to sustain a large variety of wildlife.

 Welcome to our annual plant exchange, which begins at 9:45am.  Bring labeled seeds, tubers, divisions, and trees to exchange.  Afterwards, we will have informative tree care demonstrations by UMW staff and a board-certified master arborist.

Come to learn a variety of wreath-making techniques using naïve plan materials gathered from the property.  Demonstrations will include harvest and holiday designs.  Wreaths also will be available for sale to benefit the Kenmore Garden Guild.

First Saturdays in the Garden is a cooperative program organized to involve the public in horticultural activities at historic sites, gardens, parks, and educational institutions in the Fredericksburg area.

The First Saturdays’ planning group, which is composed of representatives from participating organizations, plans and oversees the program.

Gardening and plant identification questions will be answered at all events.  Leaflets and other complimentary material about gardening are always available.  All programs are planned with activities to appeal to both novice and experienced gardeners.
