  1. Cossey Park Project

2025

Spring Greetings everyone!
Signs of Spring are emerging at Cossey Park Arboretum, so some early weeding and plans for mulching need to begin again. Address: 1601 Kenmore Avenue, Fredericksburg 22401; adjacent to Fredericksburg Dog park.

One of the first things will be to do some pre-weeding and then put down a cardboard or newspaper layer around the shrubs and trees to suppress weed regrowth, followed by a thick layer of woodchip mulch that we usually can get free from the City of Fredericksburg. There is already a pile of wood chip mulch that we can use as soon as we are ready.

The first weeding and pruning will start next Friday March 7 at 9 a.m. weather permitting, and since there is mulch already there, if we have large pieces of cardboard and wheelbarrows, shovels, and utility knives, we can get started spreading it! That would be awesome!

A Regular work day for Cossey Park may be Fridays, or a different day depending on what works for those who want to commit to helping every week (or most weeks).

I would love to hear from you if you are interested in helping this park continue to look great. Pruning and weeding are ongoing tasks during the growing seasons. Citizens who walk through Cossey often stop to tell us how much they enjoy all the different shrubs and trees. Come help and earn your share of the praise, and your MGACRA hours, too.

I have some tours and short talks planned that will start March 31st, so I'd like to get some of the first weeding and mulch spreading done by then. Lots of help is needed.

I also hope to plant some herbs and perennials this year.

So I need to ask you to save LARGE pieces of cardboard (24" by 36" and larger). Small boxes really are just too small and leave too many gaps where weeds have no trouble emerging through. Also, any packing tape on the box needs to be removed. Plain brown cardboard is what we can use (black printing is fine, but not colored). Newspaper or brown bags also work.

I will schedule a second request for woodchip mulch once I see how much we can do on March 7th, and let everyone know. It is a big task that usually takes at least two mornings. Extra wheelbarrows and shovels or mulch forks and buckets are a big help. Many hands help it go more quickly. We usually work for about 2 hours, and need at least another day of the same, depending on how many people can come.

Email me and let me know if you can help,
Tina Will

2024

Calling all Master Gardeners!  It’s that time of year that we need to mulch Cossey Park (1601 Kenmore Ave, Fredericksburg, VA 22401).  Please assist Project Lead Tina Will with this endeavor.
Cossey Park will have another small mountain of wood chip mulch next week, and if needed we will get a second delivery once we see what is needed. We will mark new areas to mulch with orange flag tape. This is an effort to reduce the difficulty of mowing in between plants that are too close together, as well as to reduce our weeding chores.

Many work hours can be earned!
Dates: April 22, then 24, 25, 26
Times: Mornings 8:30 a.m. for at least two hours. Come when you can; all help appreciated. I expect to work unless the weather is severe (stormy). Hopefully it won’t be too hot.
WE NEED MORE CARDBOARD AND NEWSPAPER. Save and bring what you can. Cardboard should only be plain (black ink ok) i.e. no colored surfaces.
Many hands are needed as are mulch shovels, wheelbarrows, rakes, and box cutters to shape and place cardboard/newspaper.
Some areas will be mulched for the first time, others will be remulched if necessary. The cardboard we put down last year has been effective in keeping weeds at bay.
The mulch be delivered by next Monday, April 22. New areas need to be marked and cardbooard/newspaper  spread before being covered with mulch.
Bring water for yourselves and snacks if you will need it. I expect we will work for two hours, but also expect that it will take more than one morning to spread all that we get. I will bring some snacks to share.

Many thanks to all who have helped and all who will help this time.

A huge thanks to the 13 Master Gardeners and a special young lady, who worked to spread mulch, plant, prune, etc.
If you have time and can help with maintenance of this WONDERFUL Fredericksburg resource,
contact Skip Gee at  [email protected] or (540) 604-7133.
Cossey Park needs it’s pathways re-mulched.  The city will be delivering the mulch, and on August 9, we have a front loader and operator to help move it throughout the park.  We need as many folks as possible to help spread the mulch!
