Porter Library Plant Clinic Porter Library Lobby in Stafford (2001 Parkway Blvd). Contact Rachel Nicholson for more information. The Porter Library Garden was started to provide fresh vegetables to families in need through S.E.R.V.E. (Stafford Emergency Relief through Volunteer Efforts). The North Stafford Rotary Club supplied materials for its construction, and Virginia Cooperative Extension operates the garden based on agreement with the Rappahannock Central Library. The small garden consists of unraised beds of vegetables, typically cucumbers, squash, and tomatoes, and sometimes strawberries. It operates mainly from March to November, providing a steady supply of fresh vegetables which S.E.R.V.E. volunteers say are greatly appreciated by recipients. The Porter Library Garden requires a small cadre of volunteers. Planting and maintenance require 1-3 volunteers from Spring to late Fall (March to late October). In season, volunteers are needed approximately twice a week to help with weeding and to harvest vegetables and give them to the library staff to send to the foodbank. Volunteers must bring their own tools, and bags to transport what they pick.
